If you do not want to spend any time without teeth, immediate dentures are a good choice. These dentures are ready to wear on the same day as your teeth are extracted.
Firstly, impressions of your mouth are taken by our clinical dental technician and a custom set of dentures are created ahead of time. These will be fitted immediately once the teeth have been extracted.
For the first 24 hours after the immediate dentures are put in place, you must not remove them. When they are inserted, they act similarly to a plaster and will help to control the bleeding and minimise any discomfort you may feel. Some swelling will occur after your teeth are extracted, but in order to reduce this to a minimum you can hold an ice pack to your mouth.
After the first day you should remove the dentures 4 or 5 times a day and rinse your mouth with warm water. If you wish to you can sleep with your dentures in – however, it is very important to keep the dentures as clean as possible to reduce the risk of any complications developing.
In total the healing process can take several months. You may need to return to the Smile Centre for a temporary dentures reline, which ensure that your dentures continue to fit properly. Once the healing is complete, your clinical dental technician will replace the immediate dentures with your new set of permanent dentures.
