What’s Considered An Emergency?
A dental emergency may be due to:
- Trauma of the mouth, teeth, or face following a recent injury
- Severe facial pain or toothache which isn’t responding to over-the-counter painkillers
- A permanent tooth has been knocked out
- Facial swelling or toothache which could suggest an infection in a tooth or gums
- Excessive bleeding following tooth extraction or oral surgery
- Swelling of the face and mouth which seems to be getting worse
What happens next?
The emergency dentist will carry out an oral examination to determine the most appropriate treatment and alleviate the pain. This could be a temporary treatment or emergency full treatment which may be followed up by subsequent visits during normal dental clinic hours. Emergency dentists are used to dealing with a wide range of dental problems that include toothache, knocked out teeth, broken crowns, veneers, and bridges, as well as broken dentures and orthodontic braces, tooth abscesses, loose implant crowns, gum infections and wisdom teeth extractions.
Be prepared for a dental emergency
If you visit your dentist on a regular basis then dental emergencies don’t often happen, but as with all aspects of your health, it makes sense to be prepared. Always keep a dental emergency kit at home which contains a few essentials before you can get to see your dentist. We’d suggest painkillers such as Paracetamol or Ibuprofen, cotton wool pads or gauze to stem the flow of blood, and an antiseptic mouth wash.
Getting to your dentist as soon as possible could make all the difference to saving your tooth, so if you feel you have a dental emergency, then please don’t hesitate to call the Smile Centre.
Please note our General Dentistry services are only available in Manchester.
